Why a Cat Clinic?

  • No barking dogs. Nothing against dogs, but they do happen to be the major predator of cats. For many, a trip to a feline-exclusive practice is less stressful. And a relaxed cat is more likely to let the doctor find the symptoms of pain or illness it tries so hard to hide when in the presence of animals it thinks might like it for lunch.
  • Easier to keep clean. This one might just be us. We're really particular about cleanliness, and while cats certainly aren't odor or mess free, smaller bodies do make for smaller, more easily handled messes.
  • Only one species. This makes choosing which continuing education to attend, which journals to subscribe to, which medical and pharmaceutical advances to stay on top of much easier. Of course the quality of a doctor's medicine is not determined by whether he or she has specialized. But for many feline practitioners, the focus on a single species allows them to practice medicine at a  higher level. (Now, if we could just figure out why there are no dog clinics!)

At The Cat Clinic of Norman we strive to practice at the forefront of feline medicine. We start by respecting the axiom that cats are not small dogs. Thus, everything from our approach to diagnosis and treatment to the drugs we stock to the kennels we purchase to the medical and surgical equipment we use is chosen specifically because it was designed for or will work best with the feline patient.

What Services Do We Offer?

  • Diagnostic and Therapeutic Services. We are equipped to provide diagnostic and therapeutic services to care for your cat's complete healthcare needs. Dr. Miller has a particular interest in diagnostics and attends 40 - 60 hours of feline-only continuing education each year.
  • Vaccinations. Annual vaccinations are important for keeping your cat healthy. We use non-adjuvanted Merial Purevax vaccines, which were developed to address the problem of feline vaccine-site reactions. These state-of-the-art vaccines do cost more, but they greatly reduce the risk that your cat will suffer an adverse reaction or develop a vaccine-site cancer. For more information about the vaccines your cat might need, please go here.
  • Surgery.
  • Our state-of-the-art surgical suite was designed with the feline patient in mind and includes features such as a heated surgery table (cats can lose body heat rapidly while under anesthesia). Dr. Miller is experienced in a wide range of surgical procedures, including declaw fixes; thyroid surgery; abdominal surgery; orthopedics; oral surgery; surgeries of the eye, ears, nose, and throat; and, of course, spays and neuters.

  • Anesthesia. We use only the safest available gas anesthetics to provide that extra margin of safety, especially for our older or high-risk patients. ECG, blood pressure, respiration, and pulse oximetry monitoring are backed up by a trained veterinary assistant who monitors your cat during anesthesia and during the postsurgical recovery period.
  • Radiology.
  • Our on-site, modern X-ray equipment provides high quality radiographs to aid in the diagnosis of many disorders.

  • Ultrasound. We are pleased to offer in-house ultrasound. Dr. Miller performs most ultrasounds herself. For second opinions and complicated ultrasounds, we call on board-certified veterinarian Dr. Paul Davis, who provides ultrasound services on an as-needed basis.
  • Electrocardiography. We provide ECG services on-site as well as consultations with cardiology specialists.
  • Laboratory. With our in-house laboratory facilities, we can provide serum chemistry, hematology (including blood gasses and clotting factors), serology, urinalysis, and parasite testing while you wait. A trained microbiologist, Dr. Miller can also do microbiology and cytology in house. For more specialized diagnostics, we work with a national veterinary laboratory and with board certified veterinary pathologists at the OU Health Sciences Center.

  • Pharmacy. We maintain a complete inventory of pharmaceuticals, vitamins, shampoos, and heartworm preventatives to meet your cat's needs. We also carry Hill's and Royal Canin (formerly Waltham) prescription diets.
  • Dentistry. Our dental services are performed with the same high-quality dental equipment (high-speed drills, ultrasonic scalers, etc.) found in most human dentist offices. Services include teeth cleaning and polishing, extractions, and oral surgery.

  • Parasite Control. In addition to regular deworming, we stock Frontline (for ticks and fleas), Advantage (for fleas only), Advantage Multi (heartworms, fleas, ear mites),  Heartgard (heartworms, hookworms), and Interceptor (heartworms, hookworms, roundworms). Controlling parasites in your cat benefits both your cat and you because some feline parasites have zoonotic potential (they can infect you too).
  • Dietary Counseling. We will provide guidance on your cat's nutritional needs and identify an appropriate diet based on your cat's overall health, life stage, activity level, and environment.
  • Behavioral Counseling. We can provide advice on a wide range of feline behavioral problems, including intra-cat aggression, inappropriate scratching, spraying or house soiling. We can also offer guidance on introducing a new cat to your home, traveling with your cat, and many other issues.
  •
  • Boarding. We provide boarding services for short- and long-term stays. We can accomodate cats who need daily medication or special diets. Our "cat condos" feature a laminate surface that is warmer and more comfortable than stainless steel. Each unit has at least one shelf, plus a recessed area for the cat's litter pan. We provide each guest with premium cat food, bottled water, cat toys, and a fleece bed for that extra touch of pampering. Our boarding area is in the center of the clinic, so guests receive lots of attention from our staff. For more information about our boarding policies, please go here.

  • Bathing and Grooming. Therapeutic bathing services (including lyme-sulphur dips for ringworm) and grooming under anesthesia (to remove severe matting or for lion cuts) are available.
  • Emergency Care. We offer afterhours emergency care as a service to our established clients. Please see our emergency page or call 405-307-8606 for more information.
